CULTURAL
EXCHANGE PROGRAM
Reconciliation
Australia has a diversity of dynamic cultures, with indigenous peoples
making an especially valued contribution to Australia’s wider cultural
diversity, to our heritage and to our history.
There are divisions in Australian society that only time and constructive
effort will diminish. The process of reconciliation aims to reduce these
divisions and suggest ways in which relationships between indigenous and
multicultural Australians can be healed, with respect for humanity on
all sides.
No matter how many analytical and intellectual discussions there are,
ultimately, if there is to be a significant improvement in the relationship
between indigenous and other Australians, attitudes must change through
education, community interaction and the practical application of cultural
exchange.
Disharmony and discord can be overcome in a number of ways when Australians:-
Work with each other on simple or difficult projects;
Come together to learn and understand about the history of division and
oppression;
Become aware of the ways of transition and contributions of indigenous
and non-indigenous relationships; and
Embrace reconciliation.
